Heres a neat little piece of local Chicago dining history. It's a wood board menu from The Jolly Chef. They had three locations in Chicago. 17 N Wabash. 10 S Lasalle and 227W Jackson. Judging by the prices this menu must be from the late 40s early 50s. The paper on the right side is tattered with missing spots as seen but its still full of vintage charm. In Phu Tho Province. In Northern Vietnam, resins are harvested from the Rhus Succedanea Tree and converted into natural lacquer, which is then applied to paintings and fine art. The traditional lacquer process, as practiced ... morein Vietnam, is complex and requires 75 to 115 days to complete each piece. There are many steps to the production of lacquer ware. Any imperfections in the wood are first sealed with lacquer. The wood is then covered with cotton gauze and covered with a thick mixture of sawdust, alluvial soil, finely ground rock, and lacquer. After drying it is sanded smooth under water. It is then painted with a mixture of alluvial soil and lacquer and wet sanded. The coating and sanding process is repeated at least two more times. Hard to find! This is an elaborately carved wooden entry way with a Chinese motif! On one side it has a bird of paradise and the other has a dragon. They are surrounded by colorful flowers. The overall dimensions are 8' x 8' The portion you walk through is about 4' wide. There are a few nicks and scratches from being removed. They can be easily touched up with enamel. Most of them will be covered by trim. The first 5 pictures are when it was still at the restaurant. The others were taken in my back yard and show what it looks like now. What do you do with Tora Takagi's thoroughly crashed Carbon Fiber CART/IndyCar Tub Chassis#0646? You turn it into the most amazing piece of furniture/art for a restaurant or man-cave of course. Imagine this in a resutrant. Bar, large media room, lobby or reception area– a race themed eye catcher that draws people up to it. Every time we have visitors they look at it and usually the words are things like“wow” and“holy cow that was a big crash” This thing brings you in close to the energy of a big crash. The wide base of the tub provides a solid stable foundation for the chassis to stand upright– a perfect TV display and much more. The story– A few years ago I bought this tub with a ... moreplan to build a race simulator using the tub. We decided that there was a better use for this. In the 2002 the CART Surfer’s Paradise Australian race was far from typical. The high-speed street course was covered in a heavy rain and the start between the temporary concrete barriers with lots of water spray from the wings of the cars made the visibility even worse. What do you get? Well. One of the most spectacular sets of crashes and mayhem on a front straight in racing. In the end the race had to be red-flagged and restarted and at least 9 cars were damaged and out on that first lap crash. The car is upside down in the photo near the safety worked in yellow– red and white upside down. Tora Takagi was one of those drivers and his Toyota Denso sponsored car went completely upside down as he ping-ponged down the straight hitting several other cars. Search Youtube for 2002 Surfer’s Paridise Crash and you will find tons of videos of this incident and clearly see Tora’s car in the center of the Mayhem. There are tons of videos of this crash-fest and this car is right in the center of the mess! It has a nostalgic vintage golf theme depicting the artist's rendition of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews Scotland along with both a gentleman and lady golfer sporting traditional golfing attire.
