This is for a grouping of 5"Like New" steel microtome knives. These are razor-sharp knives used for making microscopic slides. Each is about 10" long. But did not measure. A couple of them include a curved steel backing that would be used in conjunction with a handle. No handles are included. All come with original boxes and were surplus from a University of Cincinnati Lab(we no longer have use for them) Please be careful when receiving these- they are extremely sharp and must be handled with care. Needs a quick clean and oil to be ready to be put back in service. It does seem to work well and operate smoothly. The automatic advance works and is adjustable. I'm not sure if that is a blade in the holder or a rake that would go behind a blade.It has a very tiny radius on pointy end as seen in the photos. I have never used one of these thats why I'm not sure about the blade. Use it or just display it as a great medical antique.It is very heavy and precisely built. This is a Swift microtome model# MA501. No. 69152. I don't know the year of manufacture on this item. Made of cast iron and chrome brass parts. The microtome weighs 3.5 pounds. All mechanisms work excellently. The clamping mechanism has a knurled knob and the dial is turned in 1000th inch increments and is locked in place by a ratchet. The specimen is clamped in place and advances upward manually as you turn the dial. A sharp razor is brought across the smooth surface to shave off a section of your specimen which can be placed in a watch-glass of water and the process repeated. This RARE Bausch and Lomb microtome is made of cast iron and comes in a wood box. I do not know if the box is the original or someone designed it. There is the No. 4894 stamped on the plate. The name Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Rochester. NY is stamp is also on the plate. The blade case has the same name but with New York and Chicago underneath. I do not know if any parts are missing except the blades. The tray appears to be copper on the bottom but silver inside. There moving parts and the screw pieces can be tightened and loosened.
