This is a Watkins Johnson(WJ) CEI Division(Gaithersburg. MD) VHF Receiver type WJ 903B in military dress, nomenclatured as R-1394/UR, VHF Communications Receiver, covers 30-300 MHz in two bands(30-90& 60-300 MHz) I got this years ago still packed in the factory box and have used it little. It has the tape dials which is nice, and seems to be quite sensitive. It has IF bandwidths of 20& 300 KHz on the front panel with the IF outputs available on the rear apron as 20/300 Switched or 2 MHz wideband for a Spectrum Display Unit(SDU) It works fine, but I have noticed that the lower tuner is a little noisy in certain spots, probably from disuse, the only flaw I have seen. It is manual gain controlled AM&CW(has fine tune control used for BFO) as well as AGC mode for AM& FM. I have ... moreshown it receiving signals on both tuners, sorry the pics is blurry, but the SDU shows signals in the FM band, let you know set is working, I must have wiggled around a bit with the camera. The 903 is the only item for sale, not the whole rack! This is a very interesting receiver downconverter. Made for a classified program called"BEESTING" model RFT-2395. It was made by Aiken Advanced Systems, also known as ACL(AstroComm Labs) NORLIN& Aiken. It uses a high frequency Direct Digital Synthesizer(DDS) made by Sciteq(700-1200 MHz) model VDS-1703-366, to allow the receiver to cover 20-500 MHz. The receiver uses triple conversion to go from a high first IF down to a baseband output of 0-2 MHz where the output signal was directly digitized in ancillary equipment! A saw filter is used at the 160 MHz 2nd IF for very sharp skirts. It uses two channels to allow simultaneous downconversion on the same frequency(early I/Q method? Dual polarization? It is commanded by an RS-485 computer interface and I have the instructions to control ... moreit which I got from the manufacturer, the RS-485 controller has switch setting for 2.4,4.8,9.6&19.2 kilobaud interface rates. This box is full of nice hardware. The RF comes in over an SMA female and IIRC it goes thru a 0-31 dB step attenuator, to help manage dynamic range issues. I think the tuner frequency minimum step is programmable in 1 KHz steps. There is a monitor jack and a 10 MHz reference input as well, both on the rear apron. I figure this would make an excellent tunable IF for microwave downconversion as it covers 30, 60, 70, 140, 160, 250 and 400 MHz which are all common IFs for microwave stuff, as well as covering all of the ham bands from 21 Mhz to 432 MHz. I am keeping a couple to use as radio astronomy front ends for VHF& low UHF bands. The dual channel aspect is cool for getting both polarizations(maximum flux) from a source. Uses are limited only by your imagination. Quality equipment, well made, you can tinker with it, fix it up for a particular or genral use, modify it or scrap it out for the cool parts in it. I have a pile of these HP8640B Generators. And pulled one out and powered it on. It looks like it is working for the most part, It tunes smoothly, and all the controls seems to work. I did not see a level on the output meter, so I hooked it to a spectrum analyzer and found it was putting out on all bands but the meter was not indicating the RF level, so maybe there is an issue in the power detector circuit or the meter switch(dirty contacts) It is not all beat up like a military unit usually is, this was at a private company that closed down. It has option 001, the internal variable frquency modulation source and is.5-512 MHz unit. There may be a problem with the 10 dB step on the attenuator, or it may need cleaned or something as it was not working. My friend moved his shop and I helped him clean it out. He gave me a pair of these ICOM IC U-400 UHF mobile transceivers that he used for digital data transmission. I scrounged around and came up with a pair of used HM 35 Microphones for them. I included the data cable he made. And also he added a cable, looks like to bring audio out.
